Tasmania is still in the process of trying to make a late season dash for a finals spot. They have a strong home record, but have struggled on the road. The only win they managed was a draw in Adelaide against the Redbacks. Despite these setbacks, there were some positives from the season. Nathan Ellis has emerged as a key player and Beau Webster and Jackson Bird have been in great form.
Tasmania’s bowling wasn’t as strong as in previous years
The Tasmania cricket team has been the most successful in the competition over the past four years, winning two Sheffield Shields and three one-day titles. In that time, they have also made eight finals. The state is churning out internationals like sausages.
Tasmania had a lack of strong bowling in recent years, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as in previous years. The state didn’t rely on its fast bowlers as much, and they were unable to reach the high standards that have characterized its bowling in the past. No Tasmanian quick took more than 20 wickets, and both Jackson Bird and Riley Meredith played only three games. However, Peter Siddle took 19 wickets and Sam Rainbird took 13 against Queensland.
Tasmania’s poor season
Batting was a problem for Tasmania last summer, but they won two home matches against eventual Defend champions Western Australia and lost to the Redbacks in the classic Adelaide draw. If they can find consistency at home, Tasmania could challenge for a top-four spot in the competition. Nathan Ellis and Beau Webster have emerged as key players. However, the team’s bowling was a concern, as none of their quicks took more than 20 wickets. However, Sam Rainbird was in superb form and took 13 wickets against Queensland.
Ben McDermott is one of Australia’s next-generation white-ball players
The son of former fast bowler Craig McDermott, Ben McDermott is one of the country’s top white-ball batsmen. He plays for the Tasmanian club Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League. His first international appearance came in October 2018, and he is already on the radar for a future with Australia. As a batsman, he is a powerful top-order right-hander who also plays part-time as a wicketkeeper.
The Australians dominated the first Twenty20 match in Sydney, beating the visitors by 20 runs. Aaron Finch hit a brilliant 55 off just 55 balls, while Marcus Stoinis smashed a brisk 23 in nine balls. Earlier, Australia needed 141 from 19 overs and its bowlers were excellent with four wickets. After a rain-break, the target was set at 143. With a run rate of over 6.5, Australia were in a strong position to win the match.
Ben McDermott could get a run in a three-match ODI series against England if some of the Test stars are rested
Ben McDermott is a next-generation white-ball batsman, who scored his first ODI century in Pakistan last year. He has yet to play a Test for Australia, and was left out of the recent tour of Sri Lanka. Some observers have argued that he is too far down the pecking order to be a reliable red-ball player, but his ODI performances are encouraging.
McDermott is currently unavailable for a Test series against England, but he could get a run in ODIs if some of the Test stars are reste. The Australians are expected to rest a number of Test stars over the next two months, so this could be an opportunity for the young batsman to make his first international appearance.
