NFL
There are eight NFL football divisions, and each team plays the other team in each division twice during the regular season. In some cases, two teams will play each other three times in a season. Only the Chiefs, Cowboys, and Dolphins have a winning record against all of their division rivals. They will also play each other during the playoffs. The NFL’s divisions are the most important part of the league.
American Professional Football Conference
The American Professional Football Association was formed in 1919, consisting of 14 teams from four states, including Ohio. The APFA was named for Stanley Cofall and Jim Thorpe, who were members of the team. The league incurred a membership fee of $100, but never collected it. As the first president, Jim Thorpe led the APFA to a successful start. The league was a success, and the APFA has remained an important part of the American sports landscape.
Baltimore Ravens
The Baltimore Ravens are an American football team based in Baltimore, Maryland. The Ravens are owned by Art Modell, who served as the team’s general manager from 1996 to 2018. Since his departure, the team has had three different head coaches and three different general managers, including Steve Bisciotti, who has been the team’s head coach since 2008. The Ravens began building a reputation for their defense in 2000, and players such as Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, and Jonathan Ogden have remained key players throughout the years.
Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers were founded in 1919 by Curly Lambeau, a meat packing executive. Indian Packing sponsored the team, provided athletic uniforms, and financed the start of the team. The Packers also received financial backing from Indian Packing to purchase a football field and name it “Packers.” The Packers eventually changed their name to Green Bay Packers for advertising purposes. The team has won thirteen NFL championships and four Super Bowls, all while remaining rooted in the small town where it was founded.
Cleveland Browns
The history of the Cleveland Browns dates back to 1932, when owner Sol Silberman purchased the team. The ownership of the team was up and down through the 1950s and 1960s, but the team managed to win two league championships in this period. During this period, the Browns drafted future Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown out of Syracuse. His legendary career made him one of the most valuable running backs in NFL history.
Indianapolis Colts
The Indianapolis Colts football team made the move to Indianapolis in 1998, but the franchise had a difficult start. The first three seasons they only won three games, and quarterback Peyton Manning threw 28 interceptions. Peyton finished the season with 3,739 yards and 26 touchdown passes and was named to the NFL’s All-Rookie First Team. In the following seven years, the Colts did not reach the playoffs. However, in 1999, the team was able to bounce back and go 13-3, and they won the AFC East. During this time, Johnny Unitas was retired from the team’s uniform.
Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers are among the most successful football teams in the NFL, competing for first place almost every year. They have won eight AFC titles and six Super Bowls since 1974. But how did the Steelers become the dominant team they are today? It all started with Art Rooney, who seized a golden opportunity in 1933. However, the Steelers went through decades of defeat and were considered one of the worst teams in the league. Thankfully, the team’s fortunes changed after the legendary coach Chuck Noll was hired as a new coach in 1969.
