Keeping accurate records of gun sales is crucial for law enforcement. These records help authorities solve crimes and identify illegal gun sellers and buyers. Federal law requires licensed gun dealers to keep sales records, but it requires the FBI to destroy any background check records approved for sale. This gap hinders law enforcement efforts. States can fill in the gap.
Background checks
NICS is a national database that gathers information about gun and ammunition sales, including the criminal records of those interested in purchasing firearms and other weapons. The database has completed more than 300 million background checks and denied 1.3 million license applications. It is available 17 hours a day, seven days a week (except Christmas Day). A background check is not mandatory, but a firearm retailer must perform it when selling guns to an individual.
